HAWKE'S BAY EDUCATION BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Hawke's Bay Education Board was held last night. Present : Sir William Russell (chairman), Messrs Whittington, Erickseir 1 , McLernon, Tanner, Morgan,. Darton, the Rev. A. Grant and PasWr Ries. '• . .

The Chairman's monthly statement was as follows : —

McClure against-, his transfer from the Kiritaki school was heard before the Appeal Court sitting at Dannevirke on 31st ultimo. The .appeal was dismissed, and the decision was entirely in the board's favor. .

Pastor Ries gave notice that' at next meeting he would 'move; "That in future the board shall meet in committee at 2 p.m. on the second Monday in each month, and for the transaction of business at 10 a.m., on the following day." : ' Mr Morgan- nominated Mr Whittington as a member of the Wellington Training College Trustees, it being explained that it would be the board's duty to record its vote at next meeting. The Minister of Justice intimated that itwwas undesirable that members of the police force should act as tyiiant officers, although they would be prepared to give assistance. — Received.

The department forwarded a circular with reference to the observance of Dominion Day.— Copies of circular to be sent to School Committees and their co-operation invited. The department drew attention to the fact that no cadet batallion parades had been held in the district this year. — Copies to be sent to commanding officers. ' The department drew attention to the fact that children travelling with theatrical companies were denied the advantages of regular scholastic training. — No action ' taken. The headmaster of the Dannevirke North school wrote in explanation of the school being closed for a week.— Committee to be asked to see that in future the board's regulation, with regard to the closing of schols is complied with. Pastor Ries was appointed to succeed Mr J. J. Patterson as the board's representative on«.the Dannevirke High School Board of. Governor*.

The North Canterbury Education Board asked co-operation in urging that more attention should be paid to English grammar and history in the primary school syllabus. — Referred- to the inspectors for consideration and report. The Chairman was requested to inquire aa to what arrangements could be made for conveying children from Raumati to the Matamau school.

It was decided to co-operate with th« Wellington Board in Tirging on the Minister to have a sufficient number of copies of the Decalogue printed to furnish one for each class room in the public schools throughout the dominion.

* The Kumeroa School Committee were granted leave to use their school for religious purposes without insurance being effected on the building. The chairman moved to amend the regulation with regard to school, allowances so as to provide that no payment be made where a school is held in a private house, and that the allowance for schools with an average attendance of 15 or under be 10s per head per annum. — Carried. — Condensed from Herald report.
