MASTERTON SHOOTING CASE.
[PRESS ASSOCIATION.] MASTER-TON, last night. Tobias Miller stood in the dock at the Masterton Police Court to-day, charged with shooting at Ernest Higlit, with intent to kill. The bench was occupied by Messrs Eli Smith and John Cross, J.P.'s. Accused, who looked very pale and careworn, was unrepresented by counsel. He did not exhibit any very great interest in the proceedings, which lasted a few minutes only. The body of the court was densely crowded. Sergeant Miller, after the charge had been- read by tho clerk of the court, stated that the victim of the affray was confined to his bed, and asked that the prisoner be remanded for a week, and "the application was granted. The question of granting bail was not raised. Accused was taken to Wellington by the afternoon train, where he will be kept in custody until lie appears again, next Wednesday. There is no apparent change in the condition of Hight to-day. *^ He was in good spirits, and appeared to be little the worse for his wounds, and was eating with his customary heartiness, and generally is exhibiting • little sign of being the victim of a shooting affray. The wound gave j him no pain to-day, and his medical j attendant did not make a further j examination with the object of endeavoring to locate tho bullet. Hight ' is, of course, being kept in bed, and at his lodgings. .It is not improbable that he will- be placed under X ray treatment at the hands of Dr W. H. Hosking.
