FIRES.

♦ I [press association.] IXVERCARGILL, last night, A five-roomed house, occupied by Thomas Hunt and family, at Waikiwi, was burnt this evening. The children were alone in the house, and one was looking with a candle for a plaything, and set fire to the sofa. The children got out just in, time. GORE, last night, ; A fire destroyed three businessplaces in Bridge street, opposite the scene of the recent fire. The fire started at the back of Thorns' bootmaker's shop, which has been occupied as a dwelling, but at present is unoccupied. The flames spread to Q.uilter's fruit and confectionery shop which was destroyed, but the cordial factory in the rear, was saved. B. Downes' blacksmith and implement premises were next destroyed. Th© latter contained a considerable amount of machinery, and was owned by J. Lowden, sen. The insurances amount to £1000, and the loss over that is estimated at £600.
