HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

The following annual report wijl be laid before the members of the Horticultural Society this evening: — It is with pleasure that your committee have again to place before you a very satisfactory position of the society's affairs for the year 1906-7. No extraordinary expenditure Mas incurred last year, although it was intended that the society should procure their own crockery* in the shape of plates, etc., for their shows. But owing to various causes it was found that they could not be obtained in time for the date of their last show, but they should he obtained in time for the forthcoming one. Your committee, therefore, recommend that steps be taken in this direction without delay. Owing to other attractions taking place on the date of your last show the attendance was not so heavy during the afternoon as on other occasions, which is evidenced by the door takings, which fell from £39 12s for the year ] 905-6 to £35 15s for the period' under review. This falling off, however, is practically balanced by the increased membership. The subscriptions in this item "have increased from £15 to £18 ss. Last year's show on the whole was a marked success, although the industry class Mas not as well represented as in former years. A very great increase Mas apparent in the vegetable entries; tin's Mas partly owing, of course, to the very favourable season. The entry fees increased from £17 los 3d for the year 1905-6 to £21 8s lid for last year. Last year your committee added a new class |to the catalogues in the shape of photographic exhibits winch brought forward some good entries and good work. The judge was well pleased with the work he had to judge. It is hoped that increased exhibits in this class will come forward next year. It Mas very disappointing to your committee that a few petty pilferings took place at the close of the show, although most of the exhibits Mere netted in. The thanks of the society are due to the many willing helpers on the day of the show, and especially to the donors i of the various prizes, and to the ladies Mho superintended the refreshment room. All your committee now retire, but are eligible for reelection. The following are principel items in the balance-sheet: Receipts — Entry fees, £21 8s lid; door takings, £35 15s ; special prizes. £32 6d ; members' subscriptions, £18 ss; sale of sheep, 355; refreshment room, £3 0s 6d; onsh iii hand, ss; credit at bank, £8 Is: total, £110 l&r sd.
