TAMAKI NOTES.

. + _ [own cobbespondent.] An important meeting of Tamaki sottlers was hold yesterday afternoon to consider the question" of a mail service and telephone between that settlement and Dannevirke. Mr Webber occupied the chair, and Mr Black^ postmaster, and Messrs Bickford and Buick representing the Chamber of Commerce, were also present. On the motion of Mr B. Thomason, it was decided to promote a petition to the Postmaster-General asking for a daily. j mail service and also for a telephone bureau. On the motion of Mr Ewing son, it was agreed that it be a recommendation to the Department that the post office be at Mr "Webber's factory, and that Mr Webber be the postmaster and telephonist. The requisition asking for these conveniences was largely signed in the room, and it is to be hoped that nil adults resident on the block will append their signatures as early as possible. The document has been left in Mr Webber's care, and he will be glad to give every settler an opportunity of signing. It Wilts staiej ai ihe meeting; tllilt young and old , there are now about 50 people residing on. the block, so that a mail service should prove a great convenience. A hearty vote of thanks Mas passed to the gentlemen from Dannevirke for the trouble they had taken in coming out, and for the information and advice they had given the meeting. 1 notice that several settlers are now busy fencing, and that others are getting timber on the ground for their out-buildings, all of which spells "progress." Portion of the main road is much in need of a visit from the county surfaceman to fill in the ruts and holes. If he does not put in an appearance soon there will be some very bad places where the metal is almost worn tli rough. But perhaps a workingbee on the part of the settlers would do no harm. A day and a dozen willing hands would do all that is required and much more oxpeditiously than the County Council will do it. The petition for our school has been largely signed, and will be presented to the Education Board at its next meeting.
