(PER FRESB ASSOCIATION.; Sydney, This day. In a long debate in the Legislative Assembly on the action of the railway commissioners in employing a private solicitor instaad of sn official one, especially with regard to the pending action, Proudfoot v. die commissioners, which might involre the colony in an expenditure .of a million sterling. Air Iteid, the leader of tha Opposition, expressed regret that the Attorney-General and the Minister of Justice had accepted briefs on behalf of the plaintiffs. The Premier replied that the Government were unable to interfere with the commissions, and if the latter acted illegally there was a course presentible by which they could be proceeded against. The Sydney Morning Herald, discussing the New Zealand elections, doubts if the Liberal party is compact, and states that «he existence of a small and apparently helpless Opposition adds to the chances of secession. The situation it considers as such as hardly augurs favorably for the successful continuance of the Seddon administration. The Herald says the most salient feature of tha election is the distinctness of the i verdict of the country on the parties «3 they existed in the late Parliament.
