INDEBTEDNESS OF THE UNITED STATES.

Th« statistics of the general indebtedness of the United States, i which have been issued by the , Department of the Interior at Washington, show that during the ' ten years ended on the last day of i 1890 the Government had paid off more than one-half of their liabilities in respect of the National Debt of the country. They began the present decade with a liability of £178,392,000 sterling, and if they continue for another ten years paying off at the same rate annually as they have done during the last ten, by the close of the present century the United States will be' freed from the incubus of a National Debt. Tho statistcs show that,- in common with all advancing countries, the local indebtedness for municipal and educational purposes manifests a constant tendency to increase year by year. During tho last ten years the augmentation has been £8,000,000, but taking into account the great addition to the population and the increase in the value of assessable property, the pressure on the ratepayers is relatively, of trifling amount.— Daily Chronicle.
