THE GRASSHOPPER PEST.
A member of the State Hoard of Trade, in speaking recently of the grasshopper post which has made its presence known iv some portions of California, sniri : — "Flying grasshoppers cannot bo successfully combated, but in FOins'-.s, where the farmers have suffered groatly from thh pest, the only tmcccssfulruodoof destroying the young ones is to plough twn dee]) tranches, about 50ft. apart, outside of the fields yon wish to protect. I Construct one or more troughs of sheot iron, !say-lft. to 6ft. long and liin. to 12in. deep. Attach along chain thereto, nnd which can bo drawn by a horse, with :i boy rider. Throw a few atones in the trough to give it wdght, and build in it a fire of any light material. Keep the outfit moving up one trench and down the other. What grasshoppers might have escaped being crushed by the weight of a similar apparatus will BUrely be destroyed by the redhot sheet iron. If one trough is fonnd to be insufficient others can he added, aa they can be 1 constructed cheaply. This has been found to 1 be 11 sure medicine in Kansas, and I believe if it were more generally known in California the ranchers could soon rid themselves of grasshoppers."
