AIRMEN RETURN
WAHINE BRINGS OVER 500 SERVICE IN ISLANDS After service in the Solomons, New Britain and the Admiralty Islands, over 550 members of the Royal New Zealand Air Force arrived at Auckland yesterday afternoon in the Union Company's interisland steamer Wahine. All the men will be given leave before being demobilised. The Wahine was boarded off Rangitoto by Customs and Harbour Board officials. Two R.N.Z.A.F. men | carrying mail for the returning personnel also went aboard.
Led by the Minister of Defence, Mr. Jones, an official party boarded the ship at the wharf to welcome the men. Other members of the party were Mr. H. T. Morton, M.P.. the chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board, Mr. J. H. Frater, the Mayor, Mr. Allum, and the president of the Auckland R.S.A., Mr. A. P. Postlewaite. ' Mr. Jones "spoke on behalf of the Prime Minister, and Mr. Morton represented the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. S. G. Holland.
As many as possible of the airpien were sent direct to their homes, and others were accommodated at the No. 1 Port Depot, Remuera, for the night.
