KINDLY ACTION
PARCELS FOE BRITAIN
ASSISTING WAR RELIEF
■ A creditable contribution to the war effort has been made by .Mr. and Mrs. Gladman, of 6, Chelsea Avenue, Otahuhu, who, since hostilities began, have sent parcels to England for the relief of people short of food. Altogether they have spent £300 in the purchase and dispatch of parcels, and they have received many letters of gratitude from those who have benefited from their gifts.
At the outbreak of the war Mr. Gladman started to send parcels to relatives in Eastbourne, where he was born. Mrs. Gladman also sent parcels to relatives in Birmingham and asked them to forward other parcels to the Air Raid Fund. In the ensuing years Mr. and Mrs. Gladman constantly sent parcels to an everincreasing circle of recipients.
Last year Mrs. Gladman considered sending parcels for the relief of the victims of air raids in London, and. not knowing what body to get in touch with there, sent a consignment of goods care of Miss Noni Wright, of the 8.8.C. Miss Wright forwarded them to Mrs. Churchill, as she was secretary of the Air Raid Fund. A letter was received by Mrs. Gladman from Mrs. Churchill's secretary stating that Mrs. Churchill was greatly touched by the gifts of parcels and that the parcels could be sent direct to the Women's Voluntary Service, 41, Tothill Street, London, S.W.I.
Judging by the letters received, there was still a great need for parcels of foodstuffs among the people of England, said Mrs. Gladman to-day. The writers stated that there was such a shortage of food that the people were worse off to-day than they were during the war. Mrs. Gladman expressed the hope that the various organisations contemplating sending parcels to relieve the food situation in England would get in touch with the Women's Voluntary Service, which would distribute them where they were most needed.
