PARIS CONFERENCE

MR. WEBB TO ATTEND

LABOUR ORGANISATION Parliamentary Reporter. WELLINGTON, this day. After a long absence from Ministerial duties through illness, including a period in hospital in Wellington and Christchurch, the Minster of Labour and Mines, Mr. Webb, is resuming his official activities, as indicated by an announcement this morning that he will represent the Government at the International Labour Organisation Conference in Paris in October.

The personnel of the New Zealand delegation to the conference, which will be opened on October 15, was announced to-day by the actingMinister of Labour, Mr. O'Brien. Mr. O'Brien said that apart from Mr. Webb other Government representatives to the conference would be Mr. Henry F. Moston, C.8.E., secretary of the Department of Labour, with Mr. R. E. Kemp, private secretary to the Minister of Labour as adviser. The workers' representative of New Zealand would be Mr. P. M. Butler, secretary of the Wellngton General Labourers' Unon, and the employers' representve, Mr. Val Duff, secretary of the Taranaki Employers' Association.

Mr. O'Brien said the conference was representative of the Government, of workers and of employers. Set up under the Treaty of Versailles, the organisation sought to define aims for the legislatures of the world. Thus to date conferences had dealt with such matters as prevention of unemployment, organisation of vocational and technical education, protective measures in the matter of industrial accident and disease, and regulation of employment conditions.

"Special subjects to be considered this year," added the Minister, "are the maintenance of high levels of employment during the period of industrial rehabilitation and reconversion, and welfare of women and young workers. The first of these subjects will be recognised as a topic of vital importance to the economic and social well being of the world." The meeting in Paris will be the 27th session of conference of the Independent Labour Organisation.
