BILL WITHDRAWN
CENTENNIAL PARK
QUESTION OF MEMBERSHIP
A bill proposing an amendment to the Auckland Centennial Memorial Park Act (1941) is to be withdrawn as the result of a decision reached at a special meeting of the Centennial Park Board this morning.
The bill provided for the addition to the board of three members representing the Auckland Institute and Museum Council, the Auckland University College and the donors of land above the value of £50. The present board of 11 members comprises three City Council representatives; three representatives of suburban local bodies; a representative of the ad hoc bodies; the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. Parry; the Auckland waterworks engineer; the Commissioner of Crown Lands; and a representative of the Waitemata County Council. It is understood that the bill passed through the hands of the Bills Committee, but that when it reached the committee stage in the House an amendment to it was proposed Ims amendment would have had the effect of adding three further members to the board, the bodies represented being the Automobile Association the Auckland Association of Mountain Clubs and the Horticulture Society. At to-day meeting of the board it was stated that Mr. W. T. Anderton M.P., who had introduced the bill into the House, sought advice as to whether the bill should be allowed to proceed or whether it should be withdrawn.
After board members had expressed the opinion that the board would become too cumbersome With the addition of any more than three members, decision was reached to request Mr. Anderton to withdraw the bill, provided leave was given bv the House. The question of future action will be decided by the board later.
