WHAT OF NYLONS?

NO SUPPLIES YET

SUPERIOR RAYONS EXPECTED

Nylon stockings—the answer to every woman's prayer—are likely to remain a dream in this country for at least another 18 months, perhaps longer.

It has been reported from Australia that nylons will soon be available in America, and that Australian supplies will not be far behind. According to representatives of hosiery manufacturing firms in Auckland, who were approached this morning, New Zealand will not be far behind Australia.

However, it is not considered likely that nylons will be on the market in Australia in any quantity under 12 months at least, and this would mean 18 months for New Zealand.

America will not have any nylon stockings to export, as the demand for home consumption will be exceptionally heavy. New Zealand will, therefore, have to wait for imports of raw yarn, so that the hose can be manufactured here. It is expected in America that it will take from three to six months after the release of nylon to supply retailers with stocks.

Nylon was manpowered for war work before it had much opportunity to display its glamour in civilian life. Apart from its sleek beauty, it has the advantage of long-wearing quick-drying qualities. In the past nylon stockings have cost more than ordinary sheers, but it is believed that prices will be quite low once mass-production methods are adopted. Silk, on the other hand, because of shortage of supplies, is likely to remain expensive and scarce for a lor 3 time to come.

In the meantime, ar wording to Auckland manufacturer.. superior rayon lines should be available in New Zealand before long.

Thus, the bare-legged cult may soon end, for there is no doubt that even the smoothest sun-tanned legs look more glamorous in sheer, silken stockings.
