ISLANDS VISIT

GOVERNOR-GENERAL

WESTERN SAMOA FAREWELL N.Z. Press Association —Copyright Rec. 12.15 p.m. APIA, this day. The Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, arrived on Monday on a farewell visit to Western Samoa and departed early on Wednesday. On Tuesday morning their Excellencies attended an entertainment by school children at the Malifa school and in the afternoon Samoan people assembled at Mulinuu in large numbers for the farewell ceremony. A speech of welcome was made by the Hon. Tualaulelei, M.L.C., who expressed thanks for the splendid work of the Governor-General for the benefit of Samoa. The speech was followed by the presentation of kava in honour of the distinguished visitors.

After further speeches, his Excellency spoke of the sacrifices made by Great Britain and New Zealand to help win the war. He told his audience how anxious New Zealand was to assist the Samoan people to attain their aim of self-government, which could only be arrived at by unity amongst themselves and more education to fit them for the work.

A reception and dance for Europeans, held at the Tivoli Theatre in the evening, was very well attended. Her Excellency, the Administrator, Mr. A. C. Turnbull, and Mrs. Turnbull accompanied the GovernorGeneral to all functions.
