MINERS' OFFER
REPLY STILL AWAITED TALKS WITH BUSINESS MEN Though August 4 had been suggested to the Northern Miners' Union as a suitable date for a meeting with members of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce to discuss mutual difficulties and examine the coal situation at first hand, no reply had been received to a letter sent on July 10, it was reported at a meeting of the council of the chamber to-day. "Perhaps that is the last we will hear of it," remarked a member. In replying to the original suggestion. the union advised that, if members so desired, it would arrange for them to be supplied with the necessary tools and working place, together with an experienced miner, so that they would know exactly what was required of miners. "Perhaps some of the miners might like to take over the running of businesses for a week and pay the taxation as well; we could take their wages," remarked another member.
