WATER SUPPLY
NIHOTUPU SCHEME
PUMPING STATION TENDERS
Tenders are being called by the City Council for the construction of a pumping station in the Lower Nihotupu Valley. The letting of the contract will mean tnat the council has completed the major, preliminaries necessary for the carrying-out of its £540,000 scheme of increasing tne city's water supply by a daily average of 6,000,000 gallons. The scheme was broken up into three contracts —the erection of a dam, the provision and installation of machinery, and the construction of a pumping station. A tender of £288,412 was accepted last February for the erection of the dam and good progress has since: beert made by the contractors. Some of the machinery necessary for the' project has already been landed but will remain in the possession of the contractors until the pumping station is sufficiently far advanced for the council to receive it. '■•'•■ , As revealed in the plans prepared by the city engineer's department, the pumping station will be a reinforced concrete structure of modern design and with a pleasing appearIt will measure 70 feet by 50 feet.* The fact that it will be the three-hinged rib type of construction means that there will be no internal columns and no roof trusses. The station will house five pumping units, each consisting of a pump directly coupled to an electric motor and capable of delivering 2,000,000 gallons of water daily. One of the units, however, will be in the nature of a spare and the peak delivery of the station will be 8,000,000 gallons. The water will be pumped to the Titirangi filters. Tenders for the construction of the station close on August 1.
