Situated at 44, Market Street, it has been established by the Haeremai House committee and the New Zealand Association (Vie.), with the assistance of the New Zealand National Patriotic Fund. The centre lives up 4 to its name, which means "Welcome," One end of the room is carpeted and furnished aa a reading and writihg room Although Canterbury lamb and toheroa soup have not yet been served, there are facilities for the serving of light refreshments and through the New Zealand National Patriotic Fund the visiting servicemen get an issue of New Zealand cigarettes. ... .
This fund has also provided games such as cards and table tennis, and here are a gramophone and a wireless set.
Already several informal dances have been held at the centre, and there is a list of young hostesses willing to act as partners when called upon. ••>. ' .
The main decorative features of the centre, which is open daily from 11 a.m. to 4.30 p.m., are an attractive mural of the North and South Islands of New Zealand, a large tiki and several scenes of Rotorua. The president of the Haeremai House committee is Mr. W. E. Hancock, and Dr. W. Balfour Wishart is president of the New Zealand Association. The house is also the meetingplace of the New Zealand branch of the Australian Red Cross.
