BOTANY EXPERT'S DEATH
PROFESSOR T. L. LANCASTER
Holder of the chair of botany at Auckland University College for the past 15 years, Professor Thomas Leonard Lancaster died last night at the age of 57. Throughout his lifetime, Professor Lancaster was keenly interested in all botanical matters and did much to arouse interest in thr- study of New Zealand plants.
Born in Karori, he was educated at the Fitzherbert East School and at the Palmerston North High School, where he was one of the first pupils. He won the Sir George Grey scholarship at Victoria College in 1910 and was appointed a demonstrator in the botany department of Auckland University College in 1913. He gained his master of science degree in 1923 and was made a fellow of the Linnean Society in 1929.
Following his return in 1930 from a trip abroad, during which he visited Australia, Great Britain and South Africa, Professor Lancaster was appointed head of the botany department at the Auckland college.
He is survived by his wife and one daughter.
