SMASHING ALLIED BLOW IN ITALY
N.Z.P.A.—Copyright—Rec. 1.30 p.m. LONDON, April 20. Eighth Army troops in a swift drive have smashed the Germans' main defences in East Italy and have cut the first of three eastern escape routes from Bologna, say correspondents at Allied headquarters. The troops struck north-west after they surged through the Argenta Gap and raced forward to cut the Bologna-Ferrara road under 12 miles from Ferrara. Bologna is now outflanked. Eighth Army troops have a number of bridgeheads over a canal seven miles from the city. British divisions achieved this success and also the capture of Porto Maggiore, the big German road and rail junction 11 miles from Ferrara and 14 miles from the River Po. The latter advance came from north-west of Lake Commachio. Port Overrara was also taken in the process. The New Zealanders to the south-west strengthened their bridgehead over the Gaina Canal. The Poles, preceded by a heavy barrage, crossed the same canal with tanks and advanced against bitter resistance towards Bologna.
