TEACHERS' BACK PAY

ASSESSMENT FOR TAX ' P.A. WELLINGTON, this day. The secretary of the New Zealand Educational Institute has been advised that teachers' back pay on increases prior to March 31 will be assessed for income tax as income earned during the year ended March 31, 1945, irrespective of when it is paid. Representations were made to the Wellington Education Board by teachers in Its district concerning the position in which they were being placed through the inability of the board to make payment before the end of this month of the retrospective salary increases recently authorised. They pointed out that the cumulative effect of payment of the arrears In April, together with the salary increases now taking effect, would place them In a higher grade for income tax. It was suggested that If they were unable to receive payment this month they should have remitted the extra taxation involved.
