"RUN FOR MONEY"
SOLDIER ON TWO-UP CONTRAST WITH RACING Included among the 48 men arrested by detectives when they raided a two-up school in Albert Street last night was a soldier wearing the Eighth Army ribbon and the black and white shoulder flashes of a Middle East fighting man. He had not long returned to New Zealand. His ideas on the game of two-up, which he imparted to Mr. ,J. H. Luxford, S.M., in the Police Court this morning, caused the large crowd gresent, and even the magistrate imself, to laugh heartily. Of all the men caught in the raid who pleaded guilty, the soldier was the only one who accepted Mr. Luxford's invitation to speak in mitigation of the offence of being found without lawful excuse in a common gaming house. "Yes, I'd like to say a word or two," said the soldier. Mr. Luxford: Well go ahead. "Do you know the horse Lord Luck, sir? "Yes," said Mr. Luxford. "Well, you remember the jockey who rode him in a race a few weeks ago got put out for two years. The people who backed Lord Luck never got their money back, did they? And you remember what happened at an Avondale meeting once when fij/e 'horses left the barrier and ran toe wrong way. Those that backed them didn't get their money back, did they? Mr. Luxford: That may be so, but what has all this got to do with the game of two-up that you took part in last night?
The Soldier: Well, sir, you do get a run for your money with two-up. Some of us find two-up more honest. (Laughter.)
