MEDICAL BENEFITS
Mr. D. L. Thompson, the Daily Telegraph Chief of Staff in Sydney, has cast an unmerited slur on the medical profession in New Zealand. The standard of Work of the general practitioners in this country is probably the highest in the world —certainly much higher than that of the general practitioner in Britain. Patients have frequently told me that they welcomed the scheme 9c medical service as it operates in. New Zealand to-day. Patients are now able to have treatment in their own homes or at the doctor's surgery, which they previously could not have afforded. The great majority of general practitioners take a professional pride in their work. They endeavour to give good service to their patients. Mr. Thompson draws a line of distinction between the specialist and the general practitioner in New Zealand there are comparatively few specialists. This is because of our small population. For the patient who cannot pay the specialist's fee there is always the public hospital. J. P. HASTINGS, M.D.
