ADDRESS BY MR. ALGIE

SALARY RISE DEFENDED

The recent increases in the salaries of members of Parliament were defended by Mr. R. M. Algie, M.P., in an address to electors at St. Mark s Hall last night. There was an attendance of nearly 300, presided oyer by Mr. W. E. Lewisham. The speaker said that, after paying various expenses and contributions, a member was doing well if he had between £230 and £250 for himself, and possibly to bring up a family. _ This, he maintained, was not a living wage for anyone.

Dealing with the question of control of the Bank of New. Zealand, Mr. Algie said that, if the Government took it over, the Opposition, on coming into office, would hot be able to hand it back immediately. He would favour a directorate being established and being instructed to run the bank in the interest of the country, not for the good of a party.
