POWER CUT OFF

ACCIDENT IX ROTOKUA O.C. ROTORUA, this day. A mishap while men were engaged in removing old power lines in Haupapa Street yesterday caused the cutting off of power in an extensive part of the borough from about 11.35 a.m. to 1.10 p.m. When a guiding rope became detached, allowing one end of an old wire to flick up into hightension lines immediately above, a short circuit was caused, resulting in a heavy flash. While the workmen escaped injury, the flash burned down both the high-tension and new low-tension wires. Due to faulty telephone communication with Ngongotaha, where the main switches had tripped, considerable delay was caused in restoring power to the part of the town affected by the accident. When restoration was made to the rest of the town, power could not be supplied to Haupapa Street owing to it being necessary to carry out a house to house inspection to ensure that there had been no damage caused to fittings in private houses.
