WORK ON FARMS
GOVERNMENT HELP
MEN FROM RAILWAYS
WANGANUI, this day.
Employees of the Railways Department and the Public Works Department in Wanganui, are being released for seasonal work under manpower direction, for periods up to three months. This arrangement provides much assistance to farmers. Men who wish to undertake such work as shearing, haymaking, and harvesting may apply to the National Service Department, and tha manpower officer, Mr. G. A. Plummer, then approaches the heads of the Department concerned to ascertain if men can be given leave of absence. Engineers and supervising officers have been instructed by the head offices that where possible the men are to be released, but if the men are required on important work they are not granted leave.
Wanganui district farmers have expressed appreciation of the way both the Departments have cooperated. In one instance ten railway employees are working in a gang, and IS track and maintenance men have been released for shearing.
