A YEAR'S STRAFING
Remarkable Record Of Second Tactical Air Force OPERATIONS SINCE D DAY British Official Wireless Rec. 1 p.m. RUGBY, Jan. 1. Battling against weather conditions which grounded other aircraft on many days, the Second Tactical Air Force flew nearly 20,000 sorties during 1944. Flights were made against German armour, supplies and transport and the bomb tonnage exceeded 38,000 tons, a remarkably high figure for the command, which does not include heavy bombers. During the first half-year it was largely employed against V weapon sites, but after D day was switched to ground and attack missions. Between June 6 and the end of the vear 16,000 sorties were recorded, the aircraft hammering at targets in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany, but to be particularly remembered for air cover provided for the invasion.
