HUGE "ATOM SMASHER"

McGill University has been authorised to start construction immediately of a 250-ton "atom smasher," which will be one of the most powerful in the world, according to an announcement by Dr. F. Cyril James, principal and vice-chancellor of the university. Some idea of the power of the colossal scientific instrument, the largest piece of apparatus eyer to be erected at the university, is indicated in the fact that it will utilise voltages up to 25,000,000 in experiments bearing on "the solution of many scientific problems likely to arise during the war and post-war eras." Dr. J. S. Foster, the scientist who will direct the building of the cyclotron, has arrived at the university from an- American institution where he spent the last three years on important war research.
