NEWM,ARKET GIRLS , SCHOOL I ' ■ OVERFLOW FROM GRAMMAR The first and last annual report on ! the work of the Newmarket Girls' ■ Secondary School, which was opened jin February to provide secondary education for girls who could not be accommodated in the grammar schools, was presented by the headmistress, Miss L. R. Todd, at the prizegiving ceremony this afternoon. The school is to be closed down, owing to the fact that the problem of. accommodation at ether schools has been relieved. The school was opened on February 22 with a roll number of 53 pupils, said the headmistress in her report. By the end of March this number had increased to 74. Only one new pupil had been admitted since the end of March, and 15 had left. There were now 60 pupils on the roll. Of these, 36 would go next term to the Auckland Girls' Grammar School, IS to Epsom Girls' Grammar Schopl, four to the Seddon Memorial Technical College and two to private schools.. Miss Todd said that three classes were formed at the school, providing the same courses as the Auckland Girls' Grammar School. In drawing up the time-tables the suggestions in the new post-primary schools' syllabus were taken into account, and, with the help of the staff of the Auckland Teachers' Training College, adequate instruction in all subjects except typewriting was arranged. The girls had contributed a total of from £50 to £60 to the Crippled Children's Association, the Auckland Orphanages and the Patriotic Council. Several larg.e parcels of knitted wear had also been made up by the school. In referring to the girls' school work during the year, Miss Todd said that the time spent at the school had not been wasted, and that the pupils' attitude to school work would be the better for the experience. Prizes were presented by the Mayoress of Auckland, Mrs. Allum, and addresses were given by the Mayor, Mr. Allum, and Dr. J. H. Murdoch.
