"NOT AN ARMY JOB"

COLLECTION OF TYRES "It's the old story of 'blame the Army'," commented Major-General P. H. Bell, Officer Commanding the Northern Military District, commenting this morning on the Education Board discussion yesterday concerning the collection of old tyres, in which Mr. W. I. Bowyer remarked: "If the Army wants old tyres it should collect them from houses. The Army has plenty of trucks available for less important purposes." Major-General Bell pointed out that the Army had been merely a "help out" role in the collection, which was the responsibility of the Waste Reclamation Division acting on behalf of patriotic authorities. The Division had a truck of its own, but when the collecting work was beyond its capacity the Army loaned some transport. The Army trucks and personnel loaned were entirely at the direction of the Reclamation Division, picking up the tyres at one point nominated by the people in charge," and delivering them at another point. They had no further part in the matter, and certainly did not wish to be informed about houses where old tyres were available for collection. Any communications of that sort should be directed to the right quarter.
