TRANSPORT QUESTION
COMMITTEE TO INVESTIGATE
Notification that the Minister of Transport, Mr. O'Brien, had appointed a committee to make inquiries regarding competition between railways and coastal shipping, the desirability in the national interest of controlling such competition, and the methods to be adopted for such control, was received at a meeting of the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce this morning.
Members of the committee, said the Minister, were Mr. H. B. Smith, Assistant Commissioner of Transport, president; Mr. H. C. Langford, commercial manager of New Zealand Government Railways; and Captain S. Holm, of the New Zealand Shipowners' Federation. Sittings would be held in Kaikohe, Kaitaia, Whangarei, Auckland and Wellington in January and February.
The matter was referred to the communications and transport committee and the council decided to send a letter to the Minister of Supply, Mr. Sullivan, congratulating him on the setting up of the committee, which was the result of a request to Mr. Sullivan from the 1943 conference of the Associated Chambers.
