39TH GENERAL HOSPITAL
I agree with your remarks in connection with the suggested alienation of 75 acres of Cornwall Park for hospital purposes. Not only should Auckland members of Parliament protest against such unwarranted action, but all local bodies within the Hospital Board's area should bring pressure to bear. It is obvious to a moment's thought that if the Auckland Hospital Board leases the 39th General Hospital and also takes possession of Middlemore, the ratepayers will be forced to carry an insuperable burden by way of increased levy. There is nothing except stupidity to prevent the board completing substantial buildings at Green Lane and main hpspital site within three years. If the 39th Hospital is leased for a longer term than three years and Middlemore taken over, then rebuilding at the main hospital site and Green Lane will be delayed for very many years. The board should immediately proceed with the erection of modern, six-storey structures which can be handed down to future generations as a valuable heritage, instead of embarking upon the acquisition of homes for the borer.
