SUMMER SHOW
SOCIETY OF ARTS DISPLAY
REPRESENTATIVE SELECTION
Over 100 paintings and drawings, representing the work of well-known artists whose names star in every exhibition held by the Auckland Society of Arts, as well as new contributors and others less notable, are displayed In the society's summer exhibition to be officially opened in the Victoria Arcade rooms this evening by Dr. E. B. Gunson.
As always in the summer exhibition, every artist who belongs to the society 1s entitled to have at least one exhibit in the colour sectipn and one in black and white hung. Unfortunately this rule results in a certain number of mediocre exhibits being displayed, and in the present exhibition they are inclined to outweigh the good works. However, taken individually, there are some fine paintings and drawings, which reveal originality of outlook and a certain amount of experimentation in choice of subject and use of colour.
There are a large number of flower pieces, a few still life studies and not more than half a dozen portraits, one of which is of the artist, Peggy Spicer, by Bessie Christie. The remainder are mostly New Zealand scenes, in which unsual effects of light are captured by some of the best.
There are a few good pencil drawings of hesids, and two symbolic pencil works with a decidedly political significance which are likely to arouse interest. They are by D. J. Payne.
