Rec. 2 p.m. LONDON. Oct. 15. Soviet forces have occupied Petsamo, the ice-free port on the Arctic, says an Order of the Day by Marshal Stalin. It was taken by troops who broke through the strongly fortified defence zone north-west of Murmansk. They were supported by naval units and marines of the Soviet Union Northern Fleet.
The order refers to Petsamo as an important naval base and powerful, stronghold of enemy resistance in the far north.
The Red Army, six miles west of Riga, has captured a railway station in its continued offensive and occupied 14 other inhabited places, states a Moscow communique.
Red Air Force long-range bombers on Saturday night again - raided Tilsit and Memel, also attacked Libau. Fires and explosions were observed at all targets. Dozens of fires were started at Libau, where 25 German transports were anchored.
