Another Good Ride By Cash Cyclist N. Gibson Brings Success
RUNNER-UP the previous week, N. Gibson produced another good performance last Saturday to take the major honours in the combined cash club's 30-mile race at Sylvia Park for the Rose Shield. The field was well up to the standard of the Jast few weeks. Gibson rode alone off the limit (13.30) with Wade, Whitten and J. Bicknell on scratch.' At the end of 15 miles Gibson, Pennington and Hodgens (12.0) shared the lead, turning at
42 30. Then,, in order, came Hayes (12.0), Rollerson, King, Davey, Coombes (9.30), at 45.0; White, Harvey (6.45), 45.45; Hinton, Flinkenberg (3.30), Green, P. Bicknell, Westcott (1.15), 48.30; and the scratch men, at 48.55. On the return journey Davey broke away from his bunch and eventually joined Gibson and Pennington in the lead. Over 'the final stages the two worked hard and held the lead to the finish. In the sprint to the line Gibson did best to win by a length from Davey, with Pennington a like distance away. Fifty-two seconds later Whitten headed a bunch of 12 over the line to gain fourth place and fastest time in 71.27, the winner's time being 84.5. Gibson's win was a just reward for consistent pedalling, and it is pies sing to see his return to form again after making a promising start earlier in the season. He is one of the juniors with a good future ahead of him, and has now had two wins and a second in 16 starts. Davey is another of the promising recruits to the sport, and for a novice has the fine record so far of a win, a second and a third in his three starts. Pennington is another first-seasoner who has done well, and has been finishing right up practically in all his races. In 16 starts he has had a win, a second and a third. Following are the most prominent riders in the special aggregate points trophy to date:—L. Westcott, 46 points; W. Hansen 39, K. Fish 35, J. Wade, A. Moffatt 34, M. Hodgens 30, G. Green, N. Gibson 27, «R. Flinkenberg, J. Huckstep 26, W. Pennington, J- Bicknell 25. The combined clubs' annual 00-mile senior and junior championship race will be held on October 21, and the Te Aroha-Hamilton 66-mile championship event on October 7. Fourteen Aucklanders will be competing in this race.
