"YOU GO OUT LOOKING LIKE A GLAMOUR BOY"
American Takes The Field With Tottenham Hotspurs
AN American, Corporal J. Whent, *"* turned out recently for the crack English professional side, Tottenham Hotspurs. Here he gives some of his impressions and his reactions. "Before the game I was shaking from head to foot, believe me I was!" he relates. "I didn't stop, either, until after the first kick at the ball. Then I relaxed.
"The 'Spurs outfit runs like a clock. The trainer, George Hardy, lays everything out ready in the dressing room, starting from the goalie, then the backs, and so on. When you walk in you sit down by your space. When you dress, everything has to be perfect, with hair combed and face shining. You go out looking like a glamour boy. At half-time it has to be done over again. I mean it has to. I had a bit of white stain on my shorts from the first half and the trainer made me change them.
"Before going out on the field, the 'Spurs all get a mouthful of whisky. Most of them wear loose black shorts without supporters. They are great for olive oil and wintergreen mixed for rubbing purposes. They have big baths in the dressing rooms, about 10 feet square, with 18 inches of water, so the whole team can get in at once. The club has a private bus that takes the players .from our home ground to wherever we are to play."
