PROBATION GRANTED
CHARGE OP BIGAMY
An ex-naval rating, Henry Allwood, aged 45, came before Mr. Justice Fair to-day for sentence, on a charge of bigamy. Mr. W. W. King, in making a plea for probation, said Allwood had served nearly 28 years in the Navy. He was married in England, and had a daughter aged 27 years. He and his wife had differences, and she had told him to get out, and when he came to New Zealand he met the other woman and went through the form of marriage with her. Meantime he had kept up payment of £8 a month to his wife. He and the second woman contemplated real marriage when he could get a divorce. . . . His Honor said that in view of the man's good general record, in the Navy and subsequently, he was prepared to suspend sentence. Allwood would be released on probation for five years, conditions being that ne should continue the payment of £8 a month to his wife, and also that he paid £15 costs.
