HARBOUR BRIDGE

MOTORISTS' CONCERNED

INVESTIGATION WANTED

Describing the Shoal Bay terminal) as "a red herring being drawn across the harbour bridge trail," the president of the Automobile Association (Auckland), Mr. F. G. Parrel], said at last evening's meeting of the council that it was felt that the project was being shelved. Mr. Farrell also referred to the statement of the Minister of Works, Mr. Semple, that it was unlikely that the investigation of the bridge scheme could be made until after the war. This. Mr. Farrell said, was not satisfactory. He contended that the investigation should be started immediately so that at the end of the war plans would be well under way. "Neither the Government nor the Harbour Board is aware of the rights and interests of the motorists," said Mr. H. W. Bullock. Preliminary investigations would take a considerable time, he added. Mr. S. J. Elliott said that public opinion as to the need for the bridge was growing and he felt sure that the Harbour Bridge Association would not be content to allow the matter to rest at the Minister's statement. The growth on the east coast since the war was phenomenal. It was decided to urge the Gov- . eminent to proceed with the investigating of the project as early as : possible.
