CAMP AT ONEHUNGA

FOB ESSENTIAL WORKERS

About 70 essential workers from outside Auckland are now in camp at Waikaraka Park, Onehunga. Most of these are employed in the Westfield and Penrose areas and it is expected that the numbers will increase when seasonal work begins at Westfield. The park was previously used by the New Zealand Army Service Corps and the American services. The camp comprises a number of large Army huts, which are being rented to the present occupants at 30/ a week. The Works Department is operating the camp and a full-time manager and a staff of three men have been appointed. Three meals a day are provided by private caterers, the cost of meals being included in the rental.
