SPARKLING HOCKEY
SOMEEVILLE BEATS MT. EDEN Improved ground conditions at Papatoetoe on Saturday enabled the players to produce glimpses of sparkling hockey in the final series of matches in the Devonport Shield competition. As Somerville had already virtually won the trophy the previous week, there was a carefree spirit in evidence in most of the games, and this, no doubt, was a contributing factor to the flashes of brilliance given by several of the forward lines. Mt Eden put up a good showing against Somerville, but failed to cope with the concerted movements of the opposing vanguard and had to submit to defeat by .a margin of 4 goals to 2. Whenuapal. owing: to movements of personnel, had to field several new players, nnd St Luke's after el shaky stsrt. dominated play in'the second spell, eventually to win by 6 goals °Cttval Rovers and Training College met in a strenuous game, and although Rovers hod a half-time lead of 2—l, it failed to maintain it and had to share the points, as the final score was 3 goals each. Similarly, Grammar Old Boys had an evenly-contested game against Port Depot, and again the points were shared, with a g °Next P Saturday University will meet Somerville for the Kent Cup. with which goes the title of champion of champions.
