FLYING BOMBS
N.Z. PILOT'S SUCCESS AWARDED BAR TO D.F.C. (P.A.) WELLINGTON, this day. The first New Zealand pilot to shoot down a flying bomb, FlightLieutenant Arthur Ernest Umbers, D.F.C., of Dunedin, has been awarded a bar to his D.F.C. He has frequently been mentioned in cable messages for his success against flying bombs.
"Flight-Lieutenant Umbers has led his flight in many sorties, during which military transport, railway communications, ammunition dumps and other targets on the ground have been attacked with excellent results," the citation states. "On one occasion eight locomotives were destroyed. By his groat skill and unbeatable determination Flight-Lieut. Umbers has played a worthy part in the success achieved. He is a most inspiring leader."
Flight-Lieut Umbers' father is Mr. B. A. Umbers, of Dunedin.
