GAOL FOR A MAORI

SELLING OF LIQUOR

Pleading guilty to selling liquor without a license, Sam Ripi, aged 22, a Maori labourer, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment by Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., in the Police Court to-day. On a charge of drinking liquor in a restaurant he was convicted and discharged. Senior Sergeant Sparks said that at the request of Allied servicemen Ripi purchased five bottles of beer for £1 from premises in Nelson Street. Referring to the second charge, he said that Ripi was seen drinking liquor in a cafe.
