WAR CRIMINALS
QUESTION OF TRIALS
ECHO OF ENGLISH ACTION
(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this (lay. The hope that Hitler and other war criminals would not go unpunished, was expressed by Mr. Macfarlane (Govt., Christchurch South) when referring in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon to the release of Sir Oswald Mosley from detention.
Mr. Macfarlane said that morale had been undermined recently in the Old Country by the release of Mosley. The British people prided themselves on their humanitarian outlook, but he ventured to say that Sir Oswald was still a supporter of the Nazis and would have been a Quisling if the Fascists had landed in England. When one remembered that, one was Inclined to be somewhat sceptical about the trials of Hitler and his satellites for the way they had treated the Russians and the conquered nations. Mr. Doidge (Nat., Tatiranga): Mr. Herbert Morrison, a Labour Minister, released Mosley. Mr. Macfarlane: That did not. exonerate Mr. Morrison from the howl that arose from the workers of England. If Mr. Morrison or anyone else did that, I would still criticise him. I believe that Hitler and other war criminals must be punished. Even if it means criticising my own party, I feel so deeply on the subject that I am justified in making that criticism.
