HOSE OFFENDERS
MANY FINES IMPOSED
MOKE AWAIT PROSECUTION A large number of prosecutions were brought by the Auckland City Council (Mr. A. H. Winstone) before Mr. P. H. Levien, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court this morning in respect of breaches of the by-law governing tine use of hoses.
Counsel for the city authorities stated that there were 38 prosecutions for hearing to-day and another 38 were pending. He pointed out that unless substantial fines were imposed people would continue to take the risk of being caught. The offences in the cases for hearing to-day were committed in December and January, and in view of the water shortage at that time they were serious offences.
The prosecutions, counsel continued, covered the whole of the Auckland district. . Persons who had licenses for the previous year were allowed to use a hose held in the hand. The cases were in respect of persons who had no license for a hose and of persons allowing a licensed or unlicensed hose to 'run unattended.
Convictions were entered in the majority of cases and fines in one case of 20/ and in the other cases of 40/ and 50/ were imposed.
