SENTENCE ON WOMAN

HARBOURED A DESERTER

When Ellen Edmonds, a married woman, appeared before Mr. J. H. Luxford. S.M., in the Police Court to-day for sentence, having last Friday been convicted on a charge of harbouring a serviceman knowing him to be an absentee without leave. Mr. J. J. Sullivan, who represented defendant, made a strong plea for leniency a.nd asked that she be not sent to prison. "The offence of harbouring a deserter and the circumstances in which he was harboured by this woman are such that I cannot pass the matter by," said the magistrate. "However, I do not intend to impose the maximum, penalty. Defendant will be sentenced to 14 days imprisonment with hard labour."
