UNDER ALBERT PARK
PROPOSED PARKING AREA The provision of a subterranean parking station with accommodation for 400 motor cars, to be developed from the Albert Park tunnel shelters, was proposed in a scheme submitted to a meeting of the council of the Automobile Association (Auckland) last night, by the secretary, Mr. G. W. Hutchison. The proposal was submitted as an alternative to a traffic tunnel suggested by the city engineer, Mr. J. Tyler. Mr. Hutchison stated that the city engineer had estimated that the cost of filling in the shelters would be about £70,000. Their conversion for use as a traffic tunnel would cost about £250,000. In Mr. Hutchison's opinion there was no great public demand for a traffic tunnel and it would appear that a parking station would not cost any more than the tunnel. A parking area, he said, was badly wanted and from a financial point of view it would be revenue producing.
