"FEARFUL OF PEOPLE"
CENSORSHIP CRITICISED *»n (By Telesraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. Criticism of the Government's "use or abuse" of censorship powers in New Zealand was levelled in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon by Mr. Corbett (Nat., Egmont) in the Address-in-Reply debate. He sought the release of authoritative statements from the Ministers concerned, and declared that the Government, by its policy of suppression, had showed that it was fearful of the people of the Dominion.
The people, he said, could be trusted to take whatever was coming to them in time of war.
"In this question of censorship there is the same general fear of giving to the people announcements as they should be made—authoritatively by Ministers of the Crown How many of these announcements over the last few years have been made in a surreptitious manner, even to the extent of reaching this country from overseas— matters that are of moment to the people?" he asked.
