CHARLIE CHAPLIN
Paternity Suit Against Film
Star Fails
BLOOD TEST IN CALIFORNIA
Rec. noon LOS ANGELES, Feb. 16. Blood tests to-day showed that Charlie Chaplin is not the father of the child of Joan Barry, the 23-year-old film actress, who had filed a paternity suit against Chaplin naming him as the father of her daughter, now five months old. At a Los Angeles clinical laboratory to-day Chaplin gave a thimbleful of his blood for test. Blood samples were also taken from Joan Barry and her baby. Physicians said Chaplin had a different blood group from that of the child and he could not possibly be its father. Chaplin has been indicted under the Mann White Slave Act on a charge of having transported Barry by rail for an immoral purpose. With six otheus he has also been indicted on a charge of conspiracy to violate Joan Barry's civil rights, arising from her arrest for causing a scene at Chaplin's home. Charlie Chaplin and five co-defen-dants have surrendered to _ the United States marshal on grand jury indictments alleging violation of the Mann Act, stated an earlier report. The comedian was obviously nervous and refused to_ pose for photographers while his fingerprints were taken.
