REVIEW OF DISPUTE

MAGISTRATE'S FINDING. In November last a claim for increased wages by the Auckland Gas Employees' Union was considered by a disputes committee set up by the Government. In the course of the finding, the industrial magistrate, Mr. J. A. Gilmour, said that the Auckland rates had been brought more into line with the rates prevailing in the industry in Wellington. He added that, as to workers' claims for a general increase, he had been unable, having due regard to all the existing circumstances, to make a decision increasing wages generally, but had been "impressed by the hot and heavy nature of the work in the retort house, and by the fact that higher wages were being paid in Wellington, not only to retort house workers but to labourers.
