DEMAND FOR BEER

SHORTAGE OP SUPPLIES Beer is in short supply in Auckland owing to the increased demand coming from the services and a shortage of bottles. Stocks of draught ale ran low in a number of city hotels on Saturday afternoon. Bottle departments of hotels also had difficulty in meeting requirements, while wholesale houses have found it impossible to satisfy all their customers' demands, and orders have had to be reduced. Brewing firms state that the difficulty is mostly due to the loss of the bottle output through the manufacturing works having to close down temporarily in the spring for overhaul and maintenance work.
