BOARDING GRANTS

When speaking at the opening of the Marist Brothers Scholasticate at Epsom, the Rt. Rev. J. M. Liston, Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, expressed disappointment at the apparent exclusion of religious secondary schools from the boarding allowance payable to parents of country children. Bishop Liston said that Catholic, Anglican and Presbyterian fathers and mothers who wish to send their children to a religious secondary school, will not receive this allowance for their board in a private home or hostel.

"Australia and New Zealand are the only countries of the British Commonwealth of Nations to make no direct contribution to religious schools out of the taxes paid by all citizens," said Bishop Liston.
